Setup Using HOME 2 (Versions 2.x)

NOTE: TomTom HOME is a software program that runs on the PC and enables the user to carry out important activities. This includes installing Places Of Interest (POI) onto the TomTom.

If you have it already installed on your PC then you can check the version. Start up TomTom HOME, then at the very top of the window click on Help and then About TomTom HOME. This open a version information window, if you are using 2.x then this is the right guide.

However if you are using version 1.x then please see the alternative guide which you can find from the nav-bar. If your device will work with V 2.x then 1.x should prompt you to download it automatically. Currently it is supported by: GO 520 /720, GO 910/710/510, GO 700/500, ONE 3rd Edition, ONE 2nd Edition, ONE 1st Edition, ONE XL. If you need to manually download it then select the link to Download HOME 2 from the nav-bar.

If your device does not support HOME at all (Navigator version before 6 on PDA's) Please email us and we will be able to send you the files to install.

Step 1: Preparation & Checklist

These instructions will work for all recent TomTom devices including TomTom GO: 3 series, 5 series, 7 series, 9 series. TomTom Rider, Mobile, One, One XL, Navigator and PDA (version 6 and above).

USER NOTE: If you are unsure about whether your device will work with the POIs on this DOWNLOAD or CD ROM please read the Troubleshooting guide. If you have trouble installing or get stuck at any point then please also refer to the Troubleshooting manual. To open the Troubleshooting guide please click on the word Troubleshooting on the nav-bar at the top left of the page.

Checklist of software and equipment needed:

Also required is an up to date version of TomTom HOME installed on the PC. These instruction are for HOME Version 2.x. This can be downloaded from DOWNLOAD HOME or use the link on the nav-bar.

TomTom HOME is a software program that runs on the PC and enables the user to carry out important activities. This includes installing Places Of Interest (POI) onto the TomTom. To check the version you have start up TomTom HOME - at the very top of the window click on Help and then About TomTom HOME. This open a version information window, version 2.x is required. If you have Version 1.x then see the top of this page.

With TomTom HOME installed on the PC, connect the TomTom to the PC with the USB cable and then turn on the TomTom. TomTom HOME will detect that a TomTom has been plugged in and start automatically. If it doesn't start then it must be started manually. In windows click Start - All Programs - TomTom - then click TomTom HOME to open the program.

Initially make a full backup of the TomTom using the Backup & Restore  option from the "Main Menu Page 1 of 2". Any problems encountered later on can be solved by restoring the TomTom.

If the TomTom hasn't been connected to TomTom HOME before then its likely that your device will require updating. Before proceeding we suggest that you click on "Update My GO" and make sure that you have the latest device software. Updating the TomTom software is recommended so you can take advantage of the new features and keep the device current.

USER NOTE: To take advantage of the latest features such as voice alerts and being able to use up to 100 extra POI categories on the TomTom requires at least Version 6.0 on the unit. All these versions are confusing but put simply the HOME software on the computer has a version, and the TomTom itself has a version. The Troubleshooting guide contains ways to find out your HOME version and your TomTom version, check these if you are confused.

With TomTom HOME installed, the TomTom device software up to date and a full backup taken, then installation of the POIs can now begin.

Step 2: Configuring TomTom HOME

Connect the TomTom to the PC, start TomTom HOME and then click on the Preferences menu at the top of the window and then select Folder Preferences.

Now you will see three folder preferences, the one we will alter is the "Copy to computer". Before changing this you need to write down the "path" (the text to the right of it) because later on you will need to re-enter this as it is now. The example below will be different from your entry, so please make sure you record yours safely and carefully.

In case you don't note this down it will be the following for Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXXXX\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\FromDevice

Where the XXXXXXXX is your user name when you log in. So if you log in as JosephBloggs then  it would be:

C:\Documents and Settings\JosephBloggs\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\FromDevice

Now with the information noted down safely, you will alter this so that it will pickup the information on the DOWNLOAD or CD ROM. Click the Browse button directly to the right of the Copy to computer: line and a standard Browse For Folder window will open

If you are installing from the CD ROM then select the CD ROM from the browse window as shown above. Click on the Fuels_Services CD ROM and its name will also appear in the Folder: line as above. Then click OK.

If however you are using the DOWNLOAD then you need to locate the directory that you extracted from the DOWNLOAD. This will be on your C: drive at the top level unless you have moved it, it is also the same place that you opened the MENU from to read these instructions. Click on the directory and it will appear in the Folder: window as above. Then click OK.

If you have trouble finding these locations you can use the  + sign next to an item to expand its contents and the - to shrink it.  If My Computer is not already expanded (like the example above) just lick on the + sign to its left. This will display all the devices on the PC; hard drives, folders, DVD's, CD ROM's etc.

USER NOTE: The example above shows the devices in My Computer including the CD ROM with a Red Triangle Logo. In this example the drive letter is D: (however the drive letter on your PC may differ depending on the setup). Make sure you select the drive with the disk in it even if you have a number of CD ROM drives.

You will return to the Folder Preferences Window with the file path having now changed beside Copy to computer: reflecting the adjustment you made. Below we show the example for the DOWNLOAD but if you are using the CD ROM this would also be reflected here (with a drive letter e.g. D:\ ) in the same box.

click the DONE button to return back to the main TomTom HOME window.

Step 3: Installing POIs with TomTom HOME

USER NOTE: If you have already installed some of the categories of POI from our previous disks or downloads then you may want to remove the old versions before installing the new ones. You can do this using the "Remove Items from My GO" option on Page 2 of 2 in the Main Menu.

We suggest that if you have installed the same POI that are now being updated, that you do delete the old ones first. This will ensure that you don't get muddled when installing the new ones. All POI from the HGV Services & Fuels download are labelled Version 1.1 and you can check this as explained later.

However having a "clean" TomTom on which to install them is a good idea. However make sure that you only delete the POI you will be replacing  and not other POI not supplied by us e.g. speed cameras. Also make sure that you have done a complete backup so that if anything does go wrong you can restore from the backup.

Now that the setting has been changed to "point" to the data locations, the POI will be visible. To see them click on the "Add maps traffic voices etc" button as shown below.

Now click on the "Points of Interest" button to see the list of points of interest.

You will see a long list of POI's as you can see below a sample. All of our POI have us as supplier listed as well as help details and copyright. If there are any information or tips needed about a POI then these will be included in these details. To see the details click on the More Info link for that POI.

If Once you click on the More Info link you will see additional details shown below for that POI, a logo and its version, size and location. This is useful when removing and adding POIs to make sure that you have the latest version of them. This is also where any information specific to that POI is stored. An example of this screen is shown below:

USER NOTE: each release we will alter the version number of the POI to ensure that you can track them. This release is V1.1 and subsequent ones will be a higher value. This way you can always make sure that you have the latest POI installed.

To install the POI all you do is click on the button next to it that says Add and it will then be installed. A window shown below will appear as the content is loaded onto the tomtom.

Once the POI has been installed successfully you will see the following screen.

The POI from HGVSOLUTIONS that we supply have been specially created so that they will not "vanish" once they have been installed. If you have installed POI from 3rd parties or backups you will probably know that they "disappear" once the have been installed. We made the choice not to do this so that you could always see and install our POI as many times as you want to, so don't worry if they are still listed.

USER NOTE: Unfortunately there is not currently a function to install a number of selected POI using HOME 2 and this method. So you will need to click on each POI you wish to install individually.

Once you have installed the POI you need then the last thing to do is to reset the setting that was alerted in the Folder Preferences. This was what you wrote down earlier, and it needs to be re-selected using the same browse function.  Make sure that it has been pit back to what it was before you stated the install.

Now when you go into the POI list again, it will store the location of the POI even though the setting is now back to what it was, Over time this may be reset, if it is and you want to re-install the POI or add some more then just go back through the same steps ass above.

You have now successfully installed the POI onto the TomTom, you can disconnect the device and power down.

Step 4: Checking the POIs are installed

To check the POI categories are active and installed properly turn on the TomTom and wait for the start-up screen. If you made a number of updates or installed lots of POI categories then it may take slightly longer than normal for the TomTom to start.

USER NOTE: All the menu's and screen shown below come from version 6 of the TomTom software. Your TomTom may have slightly different menu layouts and screens but all of the features and functions will work in a similar manner to that shown below.

the standard "driving" screen will shortly appear similar to the example below

click on the middle of the screen to get into the menu options

Select the Change preferences icon

select the Enable/disable POIs icon or the Show POI on map option (depending on software version)

A screen like the one above will appear with a list of POI categories and a tick next to any that are turned on. If the POI categories you selected for install are in the list then you installed them successfully.

Make sure that each POI category you want to use has a tick next to it. Congratulations you have installed the HGV Fuels & Services Data Pack.

Step 5: Planning a route using a POI

IMPORTANT NOTE: This step is not a necessary part of the instructions for installing the POI from the CD ROM. If you are familiar with using POI on the TomTom then you may choose to skip this. If however you would like to know how to plan a route using the new POI you have installed then this step shows you how.

From the preferences screen (see Step 4:) select the Navigate to... icon

select Point of Interest icon from the menu

The screen below has a number of options that help locate relevant POIs. The example chosen will use a Morrison's Supermarket . Click POI near you

a shortcut screen of recently used POI categories is displayed, this helps locate often used POI categories. The new POI categories have not yet been used and so won't show up as shortcuts yet. Click the grey arrow pointing to the right to move onto a complete POI category list.

use the up and down arrows to move through POI category list and locate the Morrison's Supermarket POI category

scroll down to the Morrison's category and then click to select it

the next screen shows the actual Points Of Interest within the Morrison's category. Within the POI category is a list of all Morrison stores shown by distance from the current location. Click on any chosen entry to select it, at any time you make a mistake you can use the Back button.

Depending on your software version you will get a highlight screen or you will just go to the next step. On the highlight you can check that this is the location that you want or look through more of them.

the next window is the route type choice. For this example click Fastest route which is the default choice and then click Done

the TomTom device calculates a route and presents an overview map and route summary.

USER TIP: The current version of the TomTom units software is shown on the "route summary" screen above. Above the Done button is a small box with version information inside, in this case version 7.160 is used. The screens above may differ slightly in terms of options and menus depending on which version of the device software you are using.

Click the Done button and the "driving screen" will reappear with a route planned to your chosen Morrison's, ready for the journey.

Congratulations you have now planned a route to one of the new Places Of Interest that you installed from the DOWNLOAD or CD ROM. You will find that using these accurate and complete POI categories will really enhance your sat-nav driving experience.
